Local Resources and Support

Local Resources

Thanks to the generosity of donors and sponsors, our Affiliate is able to fund many breast-health and breast cancer-related programs in this area.

Since our inception in 2008, the Susan G. Komen, Virginia Blue Ridge Affiliate has raised more than $1.5 million dollars for local breast cancer programs and national breast cancer research. The Virginia Blue Ridge Affiliate is working diligently to guarantee that every woman in this area has access to breast health care and education. To meet needs right here in our community, this year’s grants specifically address funding for screening and diagnostic mammograms, outreach and breast health education programs, as well as treatment assitance for uninsured and uncerinsured women.

The Virginia Blue Ridge Afiliate granted over $250,000 to five organizations in our service area this year.

Support for You

Breast cancer can be scary and confusing, both for those diagnosed and for their friends and family. It’s important to have a strong support network to help with the physical and emotional demands of the disease. Remember, you are not alone. There are many support services available to assist you on this journey, including:

  • 1-877 GO KOMEN, a free breast care helpline offering professional support services to anyone with breast health and breast cancer concerns, including breast cancer patients and their families.
  • The Co-Survivor section of Komen’s national website, where friends and family members can share tips and advice, and read personal stories from others who have been in similar situations.

Breast Cancer Research

The Komen Tissue Bank (KTB) thanks those who have selflessly donated breast tissue or blood or given of their time to help find a cure for breast cancer. The KTB, the only repository in the world for normal breast tissue and matched serum, plasma and DNA, continues its commitment to studying normal tissue with the ultimate goal of curing breast cancer.

The Komen Tissue Bank is the only repository in the world for normal breast tissue and matched serum, plasma and DNA. By studying normal tissue, we accelerate research for the causes and prevention of breast cancer. To more deeply understand the evolution of the disease, it is necessary to compare abnormal, cancerous tissue against normal, healthy tissue. We are committed to making a difference by acting as advocates for thinking, sharing and understanding NORMAL. For more information visite the Susan G. Komen Tissue Bank website.
